With each generation, a new sports activity captures youths' imaginations. Back in the day, a football or baseball bat was what kids hoped to find under the tree. Ten years ago, it was a skateboard. Within the last decade, eSports has emerged as the pastime of the moment. “Call of Duty” and “Dota 2” have been broadcast on ESPN networks, a development that's helped lead to Twitch's popularity.
Closer to home, eSports is taking over the SAP Center in San Jose this weekend with the Intel Extreme Masters. At this World Championship Series event, top competitors in “League of Legends” and “StarCraft II” will go head to head, undoubtedly inspiring others to try their hand at online gaming. But to be successful, aspiring eSport athletes need the right equipment — namely a good keyboard, mouse and headset.
Several companies cater to the cyberathlete, and I checked out three of those brands: Corsair Gaming, Razer and Logitech. Each has a suite of peripherals geared toward elite players, but none is perfect. Each has strengths, weaknesses and minor annoyances.
